The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the City of Commerce have commenced improvements at the intersection of SR 15 Alternate and Washington Street in Jackson County. The project began on June 2, 2025, and is expected to conclude by June 13, 2025, depending on weather conditions.
To facilitate the construction work, Washington Street has been closed to through traffic until the project’s completion. Motorists are being informed of this closure via message boards placed along SR 15 Alternate and Washington Street.
Construction activities will occur during daylight hours, including temporary lane closures on SR 15 Alternate southbound for milling and paving operations over two days. Flaggers will be present to assist drivers navigating through the work zone safely.
Once completed, Washington Street will function as a one-way street merging onto SR 15 Alternate southbound. Vehicles turning from SR 15 Alternate onto Washington Street must use a designated turn at a concrete island.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant while traveling in the area. GDOT appreciates public patience as these improvements aim to enhance traffic flow and safety.
