Longtime Georgia legislator and State Transportation Board member Johnny Floyd will be honored with a dedication of an interstate highway interchange in Cordele. The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on Friday, June 27, outside the Fairfield Inn & Suites at 2001 16th Ave. East (US 280).
The interchange at Interstate 75 and US 280 in Cordele will be named the Honorable Johnny Floyd Interchange. Floyd, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 86, served more than 34 years in public service. He was first a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and later served on the State Transportation Board.
State Rep. Noel Williams Jr. introduced the resolution to honor Floyd’s significant contributions, stating that he played a vital role through “leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia.” During his tenure as a state representative, Floyd represented constituents from Crisp, Dooly, Pulaski counties, and parts of Houston County. He held positions such as vice chairman of the House Transportation Committee and was involved with several other committees including Appropriations, Banks and Banking, and Motor Vehicles.
After retiring from his legislative role, Floyd was elected in 2008 to represent Congressional District 2 on the State Transportation Board. This district covers southwest Georgia and parts of middle Georgia. According to the resolution, Floyd concentrated on economic development for rural areas, urban commuter mobility, and developing freight routes for Georgia’s ports and logistics industry during his time on the board. He held various leadership roles such as chairman, vice chairman, and secretary until he chose not to seek reelection in 2023.
The Georgia Department of Transportation remains committed to maintaining a transportation system that supports economic growth while being mindful of its citizens’ needs and environmental impact.
