Chatham County is set to experience significant lane closures as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced that, weather permitting, its construction partners will close lanes on Interstate 16 (I-16) and at the I-16/I-95 Interchange for widening activities and bridge work.

Daytime closures are scheduled from Monday, July 28, through Saturday, August 2. These will occur intermittently between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on various sections of I-16 westbound and eastbound, as well as I-516 in both directions.

Nighttime closures will also take place during the same period from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with additional double lane closures on I-95 near the I-16 overpass.

A continuous left-lane closure is planned from Friday, July 25, through Monday, July 28 at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.

Motorists should be aware of several detours during these periods. For instance, those traveling on I-16 eastbound or westbound towards I-95 northbound or southbound will need to follow specific routes detailed by Georgia DOT to navigate around closed ramps.

Additionally, a long-term closure affecting Tremont Road under I-16 is in effect until August 31, 2025.

The Georgia DOT advises drivers to anticipate delays and exercise caution within work zones. Real-time updates on traffic conditions can be accessed via their website or mobile app.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” said a spokesperson for the department. “We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs.”

The department emphasized its commitment to innovation and safety in enhancing Georgia’s transportation infrastructure.
