Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a series of interstate lane closures as part of the 16@95 Improvement Projects. The initiative aims to widen Interstate 16 (I-16) and reconstruct the I-16/I-95 Interchange, with additional bridge work planned at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.

The scheduled lane closures will occur both during daytime and nighttime hours from Sunday, March 8 through Friday, March 13, 2026. Daytime intermittent right- and left-lane closures are planned for I-16 westbound between the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) and the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157), as well as for I-16 eastbound along the same stretch. Similar closures are scheduled for both directions of I-516 at its interchange with I-16.

Nighttime work includes intermittent lane closures on both directions of I-16 between mileposts 157 and 164, as well as double-lane closures on northbound and southbound lanes of I-95 near the I-16 overpass. Additional nighttime lane restrictions are set for sections of I-516 near its intersection with I-16.

Detours will be in place to accommodate ramp closures at the interchanges. For example, motorists traveling eastbound on I-16 wishing to access either direction on I-516 will need to follow posted detour routes via local exits such as West Gwinnett Street or US 17/US 80/Ogeechee Road. Only one ramp closure will be allowed at a time to minimize disruption, and all detours are scheduled so they do not overlap.

In observance of St. Patrick’s Day holiday work restrictions, no road closures or traffic-interfering construction activities will take place from noon on Friday, March 13 until Wednesday, March 18 at 6 a.m.

The department cautions that all schedules may change depending on weather conditions. Motorists should expect possible delays due to traffic pacing or unplanned lane or ramp closures within active work zones. GDOT urges drivers to remain alert, reduce speed when approaching construction areas, and watch for workers.
