The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced lane closures on Interstate 16 as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. These closures are necessary for the widening of I-16 and reconstruction work at the I-16/I-95 Interchange.

Daytime closures will occur from Tuesday, May 27, through Saturday, May 31. During this period, intermittent right- and left-lane closures will take place on I-16 westbound from the I-16/I-516 Interchange to the I-16/I-95 Interchange between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and on I-16 eastbound in the reverse direction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional closures will affect I-516 in both directions near the I-16 Interchange.

Nighttime closures are also scheduled for these dates, with intermittent lane restrictions on both directions of I-16 between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., as well as double lane closures on sections of I-95 northbound and southbound at the I-16 overpass from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Motorists should be aware that detours have been planned to minimize conflicts and ensure traffic flow is maintained during these operations. Only one ramp within the I-16/I-516 area will be closed at any given time.

A long-term closure is already in effect on Tremont Road under I-16 until August 31, 2025. Motorists traveling north or south of this section are advised to follow designated detour routes via Telfair Road, West Gwinnett Street, and exits onto or off of I-516.

Work restrictions related to Memorial Day weekend will halt roadwork from noon on Friday, May 23, until Tuesday morning, May 27. However, drivers should remain cautious as weather conditions may alter schedules or lead to additional traffic pacing within work zones.

Georgia DOT advises motorists to expect delays and recommends reducing speed while navigating through construction areas. For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions, individuals can call Georgia’s travel information line at “511,” visit “511ga.org,” or use the Georgia “511” app.

According to Georgia DOT: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways… We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail… The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
