Motorists in Chatham County are advised of upcoming lane and ramp closures on Interstate 16 and Interstate 95 as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT), these closures are necessary for widening I-16 and reconstructing the I-16/I-95 Interchange, along with bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
Daytime lane closures will take place from Monday, August 4, through Saturday, August 9. Westbound I-16 from the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157) will have intermittent right and left lane closures between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Eastbound lanes in the same area will experience similar closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On I-516, both westbound and eastbound lanes at the I-16 Interchange (between mileposts 5 and 6) will see intermittent closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Nighttime work is scheduled during the same week, with intermittent lane closures on both directions of I-16 between mileposts 157 and 164 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Double-lane closures are planned for northbound and southbound I-95 at the I-16 overpass: northbound lanes between mileposts 98 and 100, southbound between mileposts 101 and 98, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Ramp detours are also set for each night from August 4 through August 9 between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., affecting access from westbound I-16 to both northbound and southbound I-95:
Motorists traveling on westbound I-16 who need to access northbound I-95 should take Exit 157 for southbound I-95, exit at State Route (SR) 204 (Exit 94), turn left off the ramp, then turn left again to enter northbound I‑95.
For those heading from westbound I‑16 to southbound I‑95, drivers should exit onto northbound I‑95 (Exit 157B), continue to US Highway 80 (Exit 102), turn left off that ramp, then turn left again for access to southbound I‑95.
A long-term closure remains in effect on Tremont Road under I‑16 until August 31, 2025. Northbound motorists should use Telfair Road northward before turning onto West Gwinnett Street then onto eastbound I‑516; they can exit back onto Tremont Road at Exit 4. Southbound travelers can take westbound I‑516 toward West Gwinnett Street (Exit 6), then follow West Gwinnett Street back to Telfair Road.
The Georgia DOT notes that all schedules depend on weather conditions and may change without notice. There may be additional traffic pacing or short-term lane/ramp closures within these zones as needed for construction safety.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers,” said Georgia DOT officials in their advisory.
