Augusta University announced on May 21 that Judson “J. Ben” Deal, DMD, has been named the recipient of the 2026 President’s Award, recognizing his exceptional service and commitment to the university.

Deal received the award from Augusta University President Russell T. Keen during the President’s Garden Party, a donor recognition event held on May 14.

Deal graduated from the Dental College of Georgia in 1974 and practiced dentistry in Augusta for more than four decades. He has maintained strong ties to his alma mater through leadership roles, philanthropy, and advocacy efforts that have contributed to the university’s growth. His involvement includes serving as chairman of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation Board of Directors and as a member of its Advisory Board. During his tenure, he supported projects such as campus expansion along Augusta’s riverfront and development of student housing.

Keen said, “Dr. Deal’s life is a powerful example of how one graduate can make a lasting impact through service, leadership and generosity.” Keen also said he has witnessed “the integrity, humility and commitment that have defined his service to Augusta University.”

Deal played an important role in securing major private gifts for scholarships, endowed faculty positions, and facilities benefiting students and faculty. He also established with his wife the Dr. & Mrs. J. Ben Deal Dental College of Georgia Scholarship for aspiring dental professionals.

Beyond philanthropy, Deal served as an assistant clinical professor at DCG and mentored future dentists. His professional achievements include being recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and named among Augusta Magazine’s “Top Dentists.”

The connection between Deal’s family and Augusta University spans generations: his father was an MCG graduate; both sons are alumni—one from MCG as a physician—and now a grandson attends AU.

Keen said about this legacy: “This is more than a family tradition… It reflects a lasting belief in what this university stands for and in what it makes possible for students, families and communities.”

The President’s Award honors individuals whose dedication has made significant contributions to Augusta University’s mission.
