The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of lane and ramp closures as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. These projects involve widening I-16 and reconstructing the I-16/I-95 Interchange, as well as bridge work on I-95 and at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
According to Georgia DOT, both daytime and nighttime closures will take place from Sunday, January 18, through Saturday, January 24. Daytime intermittent right- and left-lane closures are scheduled for sections of I-16 westbound from the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157), as well as eastbound from milepost 157 to milepost 164. Similar closures will occur on I-516 in both directions near the I-16 Interchange.
Nighttime work during this period includes intermittent lane closures on these same segments, along with double-lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound at the I-16 overpass between mileposts 98 and 101.
Detours have been planned to avoid overlapping closures. For example, starting Monday, January 19 through Saturday, January 24 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., drivers traveling eastbound on I-16 who wish to access eastbound I-516 via Exit 164 should follow detour signs that route them onto West Gwinnett Street before returning to their intended direction.
Looking ahead, similar patterns of daytime and nighttime lane restrictions are projected from Sunday, January 25 through Saturday, February 7. During this period, additional ramp detours will be in effect affecting connections between I-16, I-95, and I-516 in both directions at various exits including Exits 99A/B (I-95 to/from I-16), Exit 157A/B (I-16 to/from I-95), Exit 5 (I-516 to/from I‑16), among others.
Georgia DOT emphasizes that only one ramp in each affected interchange will be closed at any given time. The agency also states: “Closures and detours will be coordinated to ensure proper maintenance of traffic.”
