The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced lane closures on Interstate 16 (I-16) and the surrounding interchanges due to the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. The construction work, which involves widening I-16 and reconstructing the I-16/I-95 Interchange, will cause lane closures for both daytime and nighttime periods.

From Monday, May 5, through Saturday, May 10, motorists can expect intermittent right- and left-lane closures during the day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on I-16 westbound and eastbound, as well as on I-516 at the I-16 Interchange. Nighttime closures of the same nature will occur from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and double-lane closures will be in effect from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on I-95 at the I-16 overpass.

“The lane closures are necessary for widening activities for I-16 and bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange,” according to Georgia DOT.

Detours will be implemented and scheduled to avoid conflicts, ensuring effective traffic maintenance. Specific routes are provided for detours during ramp closures at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.

The Department advises motorists to anticipate delays, remain cautious, reduce speed in work zones, and be vigilant for workers. Real-time traffic updates can be accessed through Georgia’s 511 service by calling or visiting their website.

Georgia DOT is responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining Georgia’s highways. The department, along with its approximately 4,000 employees, aims to enhance the state’s transportation system with a focus on safety, innovation, and sustainability. The vision of Georgia DOT is “to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
