The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on March 24 that lane closures will begin this week on State Route 20, McGarity Road, and Lawrenceville Street in Henry County as part of a new roundabout project. The first phase of the work is scheduled for Thursday, March 26, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., focusing on utilities work in the area of McGarity Road and Tomlinson Street.
The lane closures are expected to cause delays for motorists traveling through these areas. Drivers are advised to plan their routes accordingly and allow extra time during the construction period.
According to the department, modern roundabouts feature a generally circular shape with counterclockwise traffic flow and require vehicles approaching the intersection to yield before entering. These designs create a slow-speed environment by channeling traffic through curved entry paths into the circulatory roadway. Roundabouts can have more than one circulating lane and sometimes allow right turns that bypass the main circle. They also accommodate cyclists and pedestrians by maintaining lower speeds throughout the intersection.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed while traveling through work zones, and expect delays during construction activities. Real-time updates about roadwork status and traffic conditions can be accessed by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
The Georgia Department of Transportation oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways across Georgia as well as supporting bridge projects, public transit systems, railways, aviation programs, biking infrastructure, pedestrian pathways, and local government road maintenance.
