The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 15 that lane closures will take place next week on State Route 20, McGarity Road, and Lawrenceville Street in Henry County as part of a new roundabout project. The closures are scheduled from Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 22 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with the first phase focusing on utility work near McGarity Road and Tomlinson Street.

This project is expected to affect traffic flow in the area. Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes to avoid delays during construction hours. The department said, “Plan your routes accordingly to avoid delays.” The agency also urged drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed while traveling through work zones.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), modern roundabouts feature a generally circular shape with counterclockwise traffic flow, require vehicles approaching the intersection to yield before entering, and create a low-speed environment for both motorists and pedestrians. Some designs allow right turns that bypass the circulating roadway, while others can accommodate more than one circulating lane.

The GDOT encourages residents seeking real-time updates about roadwork or traffic conditions to call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app for current information.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state; it employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; it focuses on developing and maintaining Georgia’s roadways while supporting rail, transit and other transportation programs; it operates under the State Transportation Board; serves the entire state through its transportation network; and works with local governments and federal agencies to advance transportation efforts, according to the official website.

As construction begins next week, drivers in Henry County are reminded by GDOT officials that safety remains a priority throughout all phases of this infrastructure improvement.
