The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced upcoming lane closures and traffic pacing operations related to the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project. The work is scheduled from Wednesday, September 3, through Friday, September 5, 2025. The project aims to reconstruct interstate ramps at the interchange and add connecting and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.
No road closures or work affecting traffic will occur from Friday, August 29, at noon through Tuesday, September 2, at 10 p.m.
Daytime closures on I-20 eastbound are planned between Columbia Drive (mile marker 66.8), Wesley Chapel Road (MM 69.5), and Panola Road (MM 71.3) from September 3 to September 5 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., with single right or left-lane and shoulder closures expected in these segments. There will also be similar lane restrictions on connecting lanes near the I-285 interchange.
Traffic pacing operations are set for I-20 eastbound from Columbia Drive to Panola Road—including ramps to both directions of I-285—from September 3 through September 5 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Additionally, traffic pacing will take place on I-285 northbound from Columbia Drive to Glenwood Road and southbound from Glenwood Road to Columbia Drive during overlapping afternoon hours.
Flagging operations are scheduled on Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway and Miller Road each day during daylight hours within this period.
Overnight work includes single or double lane closures on various sections of both I-20 eastbound and westbound as well as portions of I-285 northbound and southbound beginning in the evening hours through early morning. Traffic shifts are anticipated in all eastbound lanes between Wesley Chapel Road and Panola Road overnight as well.
According to Georgia DOT, “Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) construction partners will temporarily close interstate lanes at the locations below for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project.”
The closure schedule details alternating lane restrictions throughout different time frames—ranging from mid-morning into late night—on key corridors impacted by ongoing construction efforts meant to improve safety and mobility in one of metro Atlanta’s busiest interchanges.
