The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced that contractors will implement lane closures on Interstate 20 westbound this weekend. This is part of a resurfacing project stretching from east of Liberty Road to east of State Route 5/Bill Arp Road in Douglas County.
Weather and site conditions permitting, the lane closures will alternate between single left or right lanes. The closures are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 9, and end at 5 a.m. on Saturday. These measures aim to ensure the safety of both drivers and workers as milling, inlay, and resurfacing operations commence.
The $29 million project is expected to be completed by late fall 2025. Motorists traveling in the area are advised to reduce speeds within the work zone and are encouraged to wear seatbelts, eliminate distractions while driving, and plan their routes ahead by using resources like calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org for real-time updates.
The GDOT oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of Georgia’s state and federal highways along with other transportation programs including bridges, waterways, public transit, rail systems, general aviation, bike paths, and pedestrian initiatives. The department emphasizes innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility as part of its mission to enhance Georgia’s competitiveness through transportation leadership.
