The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is proceeding with construction activities as part of the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County. Set to occur from May 2, 2025, through May 9, 2025, these activities are contingent on the weather and on-site conditions.
The project will involve several traffic adjustments. From Monday, May 5, through Friday, May 9, there will be nightly lane closures from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. This includes a right lane closure on I-16 westbound and a left lane closure on I-16 eastbound between Spring Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive. Law enforcement vehicles will pace traffic to reduce travel speeds on specific sections of I-16.
In the ongoing project, several long-term closures remain in place. The far right lane at Spring Street’s I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound are closed for several months. The on-ramp at Spring Street has been shifted.
Construction activities are classified into different phases. For Phases 4 and 5, work will continue on various bridge structures and ramps, including pouring bridge deck spans and installing drainage structures. Phases 2 and 3 will see continued bridge lighting and guardrail installation, while Phase 1 focuses on evaluating remaining work items.
This project, valued at $500 million, aims to enhance safety and mobility by expanding and reconstructing portions of I-16 and I-75. With completion expected by 2030, the project is set to offer improved mobility for both local and regional travelers.
Motorists are advised to prepare for possible delays and exercise caution when traveling through work zones. Weather conditions may alter the schedule.
The GDOT emphasizes their role: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs.”
