The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced temporary lane closures on several interstate routes in Fulton and Cobb counties as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The closures, which are scheduled to begin Monday, January 19 and continue through Friday, January 23, will affect both northbound and southbound lanes of I-285, as well as eastbound and westbound lanes of I-20.
According to Georgia DOT, the project aims to reconstruct and widen multiple ramps at the interchange. Additional collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes will be added along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
The planned closures include single and double right-lane and shoulder closures on I-285 Northbound between Cascade Road and Bolton Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with double lane closures starting at 11 p.m. On I-285 Southbound, similar closures will occur between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive during the same hours. Pacing operations affecting all lanes and shoulders are also scheduled for SR 280/South Cobb Drive to the I-20 Interchange from 10:30 a.m. to noon daily through Thursday.
I-20 Westbound will see single right-lane and shoulder closures from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., while pacing operations are planned between SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive and the I-285 Interchange during late morning hours through Thursday. Eastbound traffic on I-20 between Riverside Parkway and the I-285 Interchange will experience nightly single right-lane closures.
Other impacted areas include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, as well as SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, both with nightly right-lane closures.
Georgia DOT advises that “exact time may change due to weather conditions.” The department notes that there may be intermittent traffic pacing, additional lane or ramp closures within work zones beyond those listed in this notice.
Motorists are urged by Georgia DOT contractors to “expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.” The department recommends drivers check real-time updates before traveling by calling 511, visiting https://511ga.org/, or using the Georgia 511 app.
