The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced temporary lane closures on several interstates in Fulton and Cobb counties as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The closures are scheduled to take place from Monday, February 23 through Saturday, February 28, weather permitting.
The project aims to reconstruct and widen multiple system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange. It will also add a combination of collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
Lane closures will occur nightly on both northbound and southbound sections of I-285 between Cascade Road and Bolton Road, as well as between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive. Some periods will involve single or double lane and shoulder closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with some starting at 11 p.m.
Pacing operations affecting all lanes and shoulders are planned for the section of I-285 southbound from SR 280/South Cobb Drive to the I-20 interchange, occurring daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon through Thursday, February 26.
On I-20 westbound, double left-lane and left-shoulder closures with pacing are scheduled nightly between Anderson Avenue underpass and Riverside Parkway. Similar pacing operations will affect all lanes between SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive and the I-285 interchange during late morning hours until Thursday.
I-20 eastbound will see single right-lane and right-shoulder closures nightly from Riverside Parkway to the I-285 interchange starting Wednesday, February 25 through Friday, February 27. Single left-lane closures will follow overnight into Saturday morning.
Additional work is planned on other roads in the area. Southbound SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive will have single right-lane closures each night during the week. Northbound SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive is also set for similar nightly restrictions.
Georgia DOT advises that exact times may change depending on weather conditions. Intermittent traffic pacing as well as additional lane or ramp closures could occur within work zones beyond those listed in this notice.
Motorists are urged to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.
“Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions,” stated Georgia DOT officials in their announcement. “Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.”
