The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced upcoming lane and ramp closures on Interstate 16 and surrounding interchanges as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. These projects aim to widen I-16 and reconstruct the I-16/I-95 Interchange, with additional work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange.
Weather permitting, daytime lane closures will take place from Sunday, February 15, through Saturday, February 21. On I-16 westbound between mileposts 164 and 157, intermittent right and left lane closures are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For eastbound traffic on I-16 in the same area, similar closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lane closures are also planned for both directions of I-516 at the I-16 Interchange during these hours.
Nighttime work is set for each night during this period as well. On both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-16 between mileposts 164 and 157, intermittent lane closures will be in effect from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Double lane closures are scheduled on I-95 northbound at the I-16 overpass (mileposts 98 to 100) and southbound (mileposts 101 to 98) from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Additional nighttime intermittent lane closures will impact both directions of I-516 at the interchange with I-16 between mileposts five and six.
Detours have been coordinated so that no more than one ramp in the I-16/I-516 Interchange is closed at any time. From February 15 through February 21, nightly ramp detours will affect drivers using Exit 164 from eastbound I-16:
For those needing access to eastbound I-516: “Motorists traveling on I-16 eastbound should take the I-516 exit (Exit 164), then take the I-516 West exit ramp, then exit at West Gwinnett Street (Exit 6), turn left off the ramp, then turn left to access I-516 eastbound.”
For westbound access: “Motorists traveling on I-16 eastbound should take the I-516 exit (Exit 164), then take the I-516 East exit ramp, then exit at US 17/US 80/Ogeechee Road (Exit 3), turn left off the ramp, then turn left to access I‑516 westbound.”
Georgia DOT notes that closure times may change due to weather conditions or other factors within work zones. The department advises motorists to expect delays and use caution when traveling through affected areas.
