Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) are set to continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County. The construction activities, contingent on weather and site conditions, are scheduled from June 6 through June 13, 2025.
The planned lane closures include the closure of one right lane on I-16 westbound near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. on June 6 and June 8 for asphalt paving. Additionally, from June 9 to June 10, one left lane on both eastbound and westbound I-16 will be closed between Spring Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive during the same nighttime hours for bridge construction.
From June 11 to June 12, traffic will be paced or flagged on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as crews continue with bridge construction activities.
There are ongoing long-term closures affecting Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound, which have been closed for several months. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
Construction efforts during this period focus on various phases of the project including:
Phases 4 and 5: Work continues from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek with ongoing construction of bridge substructures and superstructures for ramps and new bridges along with demolition activities.
Phase 2 and 3: On I-75 from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound, lighting installations at Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street are underway along with sound and visual wall constructions.
Phase 1: Evaluations continue for remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million project aims to improve safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing parts of I-16, I-75, and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County through seven design phases expected to conclude by 2030.
Motorists should anticipate delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, and check real-time updates via Georgia’s information resources like calling 511 or visiting their website or app.
