The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of lane and ramp closures on Interstate 16, Interstate 95, and Interstate 516 from Sunday, December 21 through Monday, December 22. The closures are part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects, which involve widening I-16 and reconstructing the I-16/I-95 Interchange.
According to Georgia DOT, the lane closures will be necessary for widening activities on I-16 and bridge work at the I-16/I-516 Interchange. Daytime intermittent right and left lane closures are scheduled for various segments of I-16 westbound and eastbound as well as both directions of I-516 near the interchanges. Nighttime intermittent lane closures will also take place along these routes during overnight hours.
Double lane closures are planned for I-95 northbound and southbound at the I-16 overpass during nighttime hours. Detours will be implemented for several ramps connecting these interstates. For example, motorists traveling on I-16 westbound who need to access I-95 northbound should exit onto I-95 southbound first, then use State Route 204 (Exit 94) to reverse direction onto northbound lanes.
Only one ramp in each interchange will be closed at any given time to maintain traffic flow. Long-term closure remains in effect for Tremont Road under I-16 until January 18, 2026; alternate routes are provided via Telfair Road and West Gwinnett Street.
Holiday work restrictions are set from Tuesday, December 23 at 6 a.m. through Sunday, December 28 at 10 p.m., as well as from Wednesday, December 31 at 5 a.m. until Friday, January 2 at 5 a.m., during which no lane closures or traffic-interfering work will occur.
Georgia DOT advises drivers that schedules may change due to weather conditions. Motorists should expect delays, exercise caution in work zones, reduce speed, stay alert for workers, and check real-time updates by calling 511 or visiting https://511ga.org/.
