The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of temporary lane closures and traffic pacing operations on the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project. These changes are scheduled to take place from Friday, August 8, through Friday, August 15, 2025, weather permitting.
The ongoing project involves reconstructing the system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 East Interchange and adding new collector-distributor (CD) lanes and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.
Daytime closures will occur on I-20 eastbound between Wesley Chapel Road and Panola Road, as well as between Columbia Drive and Wesley Chapel Road. Single right or left-lane and shoulder closures are planned from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day in these areas. Additional daytime work includes flagging operations at Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and traffic pacing operations on I-20 eastbound from Columbia Drive to Panola Road—including ramps to both northbound and southbound I-285—from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Overnight closures will be more extensive, with single or double lane closures affecting both directions of I-20 between Panola Road and Columbia Drive, as well as sections of I-285 northbound and southbound near the interchange. These overnight restrictions will generally run from either 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. until early morning hours.
Motorists should also note that Miller Road Bridge over I-20 remains closed for reconstruction until approximately September 2025; detour information is available online (click here for details on the detour).
According to Georgia DOT: “Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) construction partners will temporarily close interstate lanes at the locations below for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project. The project will reconstruct the interstate system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 East Interchange and add a combination of collector-distributor (CD), or connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.”
Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes during closure periods due to potential delays related to construction activities.
