The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced temporary lane closures on major interstates in Fulton and Cobb counties as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The work, scheduled to take place from November 21 through November 26, will focus on reconstructing and widening several system-to-system ramps at the interchange. The project will also add new collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
Weather permitting, contractors will close various interstate lanes overnight to minimize traffic disruptions. According to Georgia DOT, “No more than one ramp in the I-285/I-20 West Interchange will be closed at a time.” Detours are planned so they do not overlap, with closures coordinated for proper maintenance of traffic.
Specific lane closures include:
– On I-285 Northbound between Cascade Road and Bolton Road: single right-lane and right-shoulder closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and double right-lane and right-shoulder closures from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
– On I-285 Southbound between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive: single right-lane and right-shoulder closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with alternating double lane closures (right or left) from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
– Pacing operations affecting all lanes on segments of both I-285 Southbound (SR 280/South Cobb Drive to I-20 Interchange) and I-20 Westbound (SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive to the interchange) are scheduled during midday hours on November 24 and November 25.
– On I-20 Westbound between Anderson Avenue underpass and Riverside Parkway: single right-lane and shoulder closures nightly.
– On I-20 Eastbound between Riverside Parkway and the I-285 Interchange: alternating single lane closures nightly.
Other affected locations include portions of SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound, SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound, Collier Drive, Delmar Lane, and Harwell Road—all experiencing overnight flagging operations or single-lane closures.
Georgia DOT cautions that exact times may shift due to weather conditions. Additional intermittent pacing or lane/ramp closures may occur within work zones beyond those listed here.
Motorists are urged by Georgia DOT to expect delays, drive carefully through construction areas, reduce speed when approaching work zones, remain alert for workers, and consult real-time updates before traveling by calling 511 or visiting https://511ga.org/.
