The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced temporary lane closures on several major roadways in Fulton and Cobb counties as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The closures, which are scheduled to begin Monday, February 16, and continue through Friday, February 20, will affect both northbound and southbound lanes on I-285, as well as eastbound and westbound lanes on I-20.
The project aims to reconstruct and widen ramps at the interchange and add new collector-distributor lanes or connecting lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange. Auxiliary lanes will also be added in certain sections.
On I-285 Northbound, a single right-lane and right-shoulder closure is planned from Cascade Road to Bolton Road each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Southbound on I-285, similar closures will occur between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive during the same nightly hours. There will also be double right-lane closures between these points from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., as well as pacing operations affecting all lanes between SR 280/South Cobb Drive and the I-20 Interchange daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
I-20 Westbound drivers can expect single right-lane closures from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with double lane closures occurring later in the evening until early morning hours. Pacing operations are scheduled for SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive to the I-285 Interchange during late morning hours.
Eastbound on I-20, there will be pacing operations overnight between Riverside Parkway and the I-285 Interchange early in the week, followed by various single and double lane closures throughout the week during nighttime hours.
Additional lane restrictions are set for other nearby routes including SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive.
Officials advise that exact times may change depending on weather conditions, with intermittent traffic pacing or ramp closures possible within work zones beyond those listed above. Motorists are encouraged to expect delays, drive cautiously through work areas, remain alert for workers, reduce speed when necessary, and check real-time updates before traveling by calling 511 or visiting https://511ga.org/. “Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers,” according to Georgia DOT’s statement.
