The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a series of lane closures and traffic pacing for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project, scheduled to take place from Friday, February 27, 2026, through Friday, March 6, 2026. The work is dependent on weather conditions.
The project aims to reconstruct system-to-system ramps at the I-285/I-20 East Interchange. In addition, it will add new collector-distributor lanes and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.
Daytime closures are planned each day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on sections of I-20 Eastbound between Columbia Drive and Fairington Road. These closures will affect single right or left lanes as well as shoulders in multiple segments: Wesley Chapel Road to Panola Road; Columbia Drive to Wesley Chapel Road; and Panola Road to Fairington Road.
Flagging operations will occur from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway, Miller Road over I-20, and Chupp Way at Fairington Road during the same period.
Overnight work is scheduled each night from 7 p.m. or later until early morning hours on both eastbound and westbound directions of I-20 and both directions of I-285 near the interchange area. This includes single or double lane closures in several locations:
– On I-20 Eastbound: between Wesley Chapel Road and Panola Road; connecting lanes from the interchange to Wesley Chapel; Columbia Drive to Wesley Chapel; Panola Road to Fairington Overpass.
– On I-285 Southbound: between the interchange and Columbia Drive; Glenwood Road to the interchange.
– On I-285 Northbound: Columbia Drive to the interchange; interchange to Glenwood.
I-20 Westbound will also see alternating lane closures overnight between Panola Road and Columbia Drive as well as other segments approaching Wesley Chapel.
Additional specific times for each closure vary by location but generally fall within daytime hours (9 a.m.–2 p.m.) for eastbound work, evening into overnight hours (7–9 p.m.–5 a.m.) for most other activity.
According to GDOT communications, “Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) construction partners will temporarily close interstate lanes at the locations below for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project.”
The GDOT reminds drivers that these lane closures may cause delays in affected areas throughout DeKalb County during construction dates.
