Motorists in Georgia should prepare for lane and ramp closures on I-16, I-95, and I-516 as part of the 16@95 Improvement Projects. The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced that these closures are necessary to widen I-16 and reconstruct the interchanges at I-16/I-95 and I-16/I-516.
From Sunday, March 1, through Saturday, March 7, daytime intermittent right- and left-lane closures will occur on westbound I-16 from the I-16/I-516 Interchange (milepost 164) to the I-16/I-95 Interchange (milepost 157), as well as eastbound from milepost 157 to milepost 164. Similar closures are planned for both directions of I-516 near the I-16 interchange.
Nighttime work during this period includes intermittent lane closures on both directions of I-16 between the same interchanges from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., and double-lane closures on northbound and southbound I-95 at the I-16 overpass between mileposts 98 and 101 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Detours will be implemented but coordinated so that only one ramp is closed at any given time within each interchange area. For example, from March 1–7 between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., motorists using the eastbound ramp from I-16 to eastbound I-516 (Exit 164) will need to follow a signed detour via West Gwinnett Street before returning to their intended route.
The department also outlined additional projected closures for mid-March, with daytime and nighttime work continuing through March 21. There will be no roadwork or traffic restrictions during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, from noon on Friday, March 13 through Wednesday morning, March 18.
Further details include specific detours affecting ramps connecting all three highways involved in the project—such as temporary reroutes for those traveling between various combinations of directions on I‑95, I‑16, and I‑516—during overnight hours in mid-to-late March.
Georgia DOT encourages drivers to check daily updates and real-time alerts through Georgia NaviGAtor at www.511ga.org for current traffic information.
The department stated: “Closures and detours will be coordinated to ensure proper maintenance of traffic. No more than one ramp in the I‑16/I‑516 Interchange will be closed at a time.” They added: “The information you provide to the Georgia Department of Transportation will be used solely by Georgia DOT. The Department does not sell or offer a subscriber’s personal information to third parties for marketing purposes.”
