Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) maintenance crews are set to implement a long-term lane shift on State Route 237/Piedmont Road in the Lenox area of Atlanta starting Friday night. The shift will reduce travel lanes to two in each direction and is expected to last approximately 90 days, weather permitting.

According to GDOT, beginning at 9 p.m. on August 15, southbound traffic on Piedmont Road between Lenox Road NE and Peachtree Road NE will be shifted left to allow crews to work in the far right lane. Advance signage will alert motorists approaching the area about the change. Both northbound and southbound directions will be limited to two lanes during this period.

The lane shift is part of the SR 237/Piedmont Road widening project, which aims to add an extra travel lane in each direction, create bike lanes, and upgrade pedestrian crossings. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026 with an estimated cost of $11.6 million.

Motorists are reminded by GDOT to reduce speed in the work zone, wear seatbelts, avoid distractions such as using phones while driving, and plan routes ahead of time. For real-time updates on traffic conditions and work status, drivers can call 511 or visit 511ga.org, or download the 511GA app for Apple or Android devices.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways.
