Contractors working on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb will continue construction activities from May 16 to May 23, 2025. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), no new traffic impacts are scheduled for this period, though ongoing long-term closures remain in place.

The far right lane of Spring Street at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound have been closed for several months. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.

Construction activities planned for May 16-23 include work on Phases 4 and 5, which cover areas from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek. These activities involve continuing construction of bridge substructures and superstructures, new bridge decks, entrance ramps, and demolition of certain structures. Retaining walls along I-75 northbound and southbound will also be constructed, alongside drainage system installations.

In Phases 2 and 3, spanning from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound, lighting installation on Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street will proceed. Concrete sound and visual walls along I-75 are also part of the ongoing efforts.

Phase 1 focuses on evaluating remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.

This $500 million project aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing sections of I-16, I-75, and their interchange. It is expected to conclude by 2030 after completing seven design and construction phases. Once finished, it promises improved lanes, ramps, bridges, drainage systems, among other upgrades for local commuters as well as regional travelers.

Motorists should anticipate delays due to weather or other factors affecting schedules. They are advised to exercise caution when traveling through work zones. Real-time updates can be accessed via Georgia’s traffic information services.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” states GDOT’s vision statement emphasizing its commitment to innovation in transportation systems across the state.
