Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue construction activities on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County from July 4 to July 11, 2025. The work is contingent upon weather and site conditions.
Traffic pacing is scheduled overnight on Monday, July 7, and Friday, July 11, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Law enforcement vehicles will slow traffic to safer speeds on I-16 eastbound between the interchange and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive, as well as westbound between US 23/Ocmulgee East Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive.
Ongoing long-term closures include Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
Construction activities planned for this period include continuing bridge substructure and superstructure construction for entrance and exit ramps along I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek. New Second Street bridge substructure work will proceed alongside new bridge structures on both eastbound and westbound I-16. Demolition of certain ramp sections will also continue.
Work under Phases 2 and 3 involves installing Riverside Bridge lighting and Walnut Street lighting with guardrails over I-75. Construction of sound and visual walls along I-75 northbound and southbound is ongoing.
Phase 1 efforts focus on evaluating remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million project aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening roads, reconstructing interchanges, adding lanes, improving ramps, upgrading bridges, constructing walls, and enhancing drainage systems through seven design phases extending until 2030.
Motorists are advised that dates may change due to weather or other factors. They should expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, and access real-time information via GDOT’s services such as calling 511 or visiting their website.
“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” said GDOT officials in a statement emphasizing their commitment to innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in transportation systems across Georgia.
