Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County next week. The construction activities are scheduled from Friday, May 23, 2025, through Friday, May 30, 2025, weather and site conditions permitting.
Lane closures and traffic shifts are planned for Monday, May 26, and Tuesday, May 30. These will occur nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following mornings. Additionally, from Wednesday to Friday, law enforcement vehicles will pace traffic at slower speeds on specific sections of I-16 eastbound and westbound.
There are ongoing long-term closures affecting Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound. The Spring Street on-ramp to I-16 westbound has been relocated to the far left lane.
The construction activities for May 23-30 include continuing phases four and five from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek. This involves bridge substructure and superstructure work for various ramps and bridges along with retaining wall construction throughout the project area.
Phases two and three involve continued installation of lighting on Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street over I-75 as well as sound and visual walls along I-75 northbound and southbound.
The $500 million project aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing parts of I-16, I-75, and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County. It is being delivered in seven phases expected to continue through 2030. Upon completion, it will feature new lanes, ramps, upgraded bridges, walls, drainage systems among other improvements.
Motorists should anticipate delays due to these activities. They are advised to exercise caution while traveling through work zones. For real-time updates on work status or traffic conditions, they can call 511 or visit 511ga.org.
“The Georgia Department of Transportation plans constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” states GDOT about its role in transportation infrastructure across various modes including public transit rail bike pedestrian programs among others.
