Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) are continuing work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County. The construction activities are scheduled from July 11 to July 18, 2025, depending on weather and site conditions.
On Thursday, July 17, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., the Spring Street entrance ramp will be closed overnight. Drivers will be directed to a detour route during this closure as crews work on the Spring Street overpass bridge. Additionally, long-term closures include the far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound. The Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
The ongoing construction includes phases four and five, which involve building substructures and superstructures for various bridges and ramps connected to I-16 and I-75. Work is also underway for new MSE walls along I-75 northbound and southbound.
Phases two and three focus on lighting installations for Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street, as well as constructing sound and visual walls along I-75.
Phase one involves evaluating remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million project aims to improve safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing parts of I-16, I-75, and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County. The project is divided into seven phases expected to continue through 2030.
Motorists should anticipate delays due to these activities. GDOT advises exercising caution in work zones and offers real-time traffic updates via phone or their website.
“The Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” stated GDOT officials regarding their broader mission involving various transportation programs across the state.
