CommonSpirit – Memorial Hospitals in Chattanooga and Hixson received “A” hospital safety grades from The Leapfrog Group, according to a May 15 statement. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit organization that focuses on patient safety. Memorial Hospital was the only local health system to receive “A” ratings this reporting period, placing it among the top 39 percent of hospitals nationwide and one of only 26 in Tennessee.

The recognition highlights ongoing efforts to maintain high standards for patient care. Both hospitals have been designated as “straight A” hospitals—Chattanooga for the twelfth consecutive time and Hixson for the ninth. This distinction means each has earned an A grade for spring 2026 and maintained that level across five or more grading rounds, a status achieved by just 16 percent of eligible hospitals this cycle.

“This recognition shows the dedication and teamwork in our culture,” said Janelle Reilly, market president, CommonSpirit, Tennessee and Georgia. “Our employees are committed to maintaining high safety standards and providing compassionate, quality care. We are proud of our team and their focus on our patients’ well-being.”

The Leapfrog Group assigns letter grades ranging from A to F based on evidence-based measures such as errors, accidents, injuries, infections, and hospital systems designed to prevent them. Its Hospital Safety Grade program is peer-reviewed, transparent, updated twice yearly in fall and spring, and free to the public.

Chi Memorial Hospital Georgia includes three hospitals along with care sites such as freestanding outpatient imaging centers; it forms part of CommonSpirit Health system according to the official website. The hospital has also received recognition for its commitment to quality care from leading organizations according to the official website.

Looking ahead, both hospitals aim to continue their focus on superior patient outcomes through established safety practices.
