Minority Leader Sen. Harold Jones II of Augusta has responded to the recent dismissal of a racketeering case brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The case, which targeted former President Donald Trump and others for alleged efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results, was dismissed by Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.
In his statement, Sen. Jones expressed disappointment with the court’s decision. “I am deeply disappointed in today’s decision, which allows President Donald Trump to evade accountability for his clear violations of Georgia law. By dismissing this case, the court has enabled him and his co-conspirators to avoid responsibility for their coordinated effort to overturn Georgia’s election results and steal the 2020 election.”
Sen. Jones also addressed how the outcome would affect the Senate Democratic Caucus’ work moving forward. “While this outcome is a setback for justice, it will not deter the Senate Democratic Caucus from doing the work Georgians expect of us. We will continue fighting every day to lower housing costs, reduce health insurance premiums and bring down grocery prices as families struggle through the affordability crisis created under Donald Trump’s leadership.”
He concluded by contrasting his caucus’s priorities with those of other lawmakers: “At a time when the majority remains consumed by pure politics, our focus remains on delivering real solutions for the people of Georgia.”
Sen. Harold V. Jones II represents Georgia’s 22nd Senate District, covering part of Richmond County.
