National Fishing and Boating Week will take place in Georgia from June 6 to June 14, according to a May 28 announcement by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. The event offers residents an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities, introduce newcomers to fishing, and participate in two free fishing days.

Scott Robinson, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Division Fisheries Management Section, said, “There is no better time to enjoy Georgia’s incredible fishing and boating opportunities than during National Fishing and Boating Week. Whether you are introducing a child to their first fishing trip, spending time with friends and family, or simply enjoying a quiet morning on the water, fishing and boating create lasting memories while supporting conservation through outdoor recreation.”

Established in 1979, National Fishing and Boating Week aims to celebrate America’s outdoor traditions while encouraging people of all ages and experience levels to discover the joys of fishing and boating. During this week in Georgia, residents can fish public waters without a license on Saturday, June 6, and Saturday, June 13. Family Fishing Events and educational opportunities will also be held across the state.

For those unable to attend events outdoors, children can access Angler Academy online for games, crafts, puzzles, and educational content about fishing at takemefishing.org. Information about local events is available at gooutdoorsgeorgia.com.

Georgia provides various locations for anglers including mountain trout streams, neighborhood ponds, major reservoirs, rivers, coastal waters, as well as eleven Public Fishing Areas managed by the state. State parks also offer additional options for those seeking places to fish.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources manages facilities such as state parks and fish hatcheries; maintains an annual budget of $355 million; employs approximately 2,700 staff members; promotes cultural heritage through historic sites; received national recognition for its Outdoors Beyond Barriers program; and focuses on sustaining natural resources while promoting commerce through environmental practices, all according to the official website.
