Weather permitting, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) plans to open a new auxiliary lane on I-285 westbound between Roswell Road and Riverside Drive on Monday, December 8. This addition will bring the total number of travel lanes in this section to six.

The new lane is part of the I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension Project, which also included reconstruction of the Mt. Vernon Highway bridge over I-285. While major construction is finished and all lanes are now aligned, minor tasks such as punch list items and noise barrier work will continue mostly at night during off-peak hours. The project is expected to reach substantial completion by the end of December 2025.

According to Georgia DOT, “The construction and opening of this new lane mark a major milestone achieved for the ongoing I-285 Westbound Auxiliary Lane Extension Project. The auxiliary lane will enhance traffic flow and provide operational improvements to the I-285 general purpose lanes by helping motorists merge more safely and reducing conflict points.”

This initiative is part of broader efforts under the Major Mobility Investment Program (MMIP), aimed at increasing roadway capacity, improving freight movement, enhancing safety, and reducing travel times across Georgia’s transportation network.

Georgia DOT advises that schedules may change depending on weather conditions. Drivers should be prepared for possible intermittent traffic pacing as well as occasional lane and ramp closures within the work zone. Motorists are encouraged to drive cautiously through these areas, reduce speed, remain alert for workers, and expect potential delays.
