The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced that the new I-20 westbound to I-285 northbound and southbound connecting lane system is expected to open this spring, weather permitting. This project is part of ongoing improvements at the I-285/I-20 East Interchange.
According to Georgia DOT, the new system-to-system ramp flyover bridge (from westbound I-20 to southbound I-285) and a collector-distributor (CD) lane are designed to help drivers merge more efficiently and safely onto I-285. These changes aim to remove two major conflict points that contribute to congestion on I-20. Drivers will have an earlier decision point for accessing I-285, with the barrier-separated connecting lane beginning about 0.5 miles east of the Wesley Chapel Road exit.
Motorists will exit right into the new lane, which will be marked by permanent signage. Additional temporary signs will be placed ahead of the opening to indicate the new traffic pattern and show where drivers should exit.
The connecting lane runs alongside I-20 before passing under the recently opened Wesley Chapel Road on-ramp in a braided ramp configuration. Drivers using this on-ramp can merge either right into the connecting lane or left onto westbound I-20.
Northbound traffic will use the connecting lane for access to a new at-grade ramp for northbound I-285 or a new flyover ramp bridge for southbound traffic on I-285. Both features are set to open together this spring.
The updated design removes an old cloverleaf configuration and replaces it with fewer conflict points and a more gradual curve. The Georgia DOT states that this change is intended to reduce congestion caused by vehicles slowing down around tight curves and steep grades in the existing interchange, improving both traffic flow and safety.
The elimination of two major conflict points—the current northbound and southbound on-ramps—will also reduce congestion along westbound I-20’s mainline, creating what officials say will be a safer corridor.
With these features opening soon, Georgia DOT says this marks one of the last major milestones before Substantial Completion of the project later in 2026. Remaining work includes noise walls, lighting, drainage improvements, and other finishing touches.
Georgia DOT encourages motorists traveling through the area to slow down, stay alert for crews, follow posted signage, and keep informed through official channels such as their website https://majormobilityga.com/projects/eastsideic/ or by contacting EastInterchange@dot.ga.gov or calling 833-418-4357.
