The National Federation of Independent Business State Director Hunter Loggins responded on May 15 to Governor Brian Kemp’s decision to extend the suspension of Georgia’s state fuel tax past Memorial Day weekend.
The suspension will begin at 12:01 a.m. on May 20 and continue through June 3, following the expiration of a previous gas tax suspension under House Bill 1199, which ends at 11:59 p.m. on May 19. The move comes as small business owners face rising operating costs due to recent increases in fuel prices.
“This is a big relief for Georgia’s small business community,” Loggins said. “Fuel costs affect nearly every part of the supply chain, from production to delivery. While gas prices are below the record highs of 2022, they have risen sharply these past few weeks, driving up costs across the board.”
According to AAA, gasoline prices in Georgia currently average $4.02 per gallon, compared with $3.68 a month ago and $2.93 one year ago.
“Suspending Georgia’s 33.3-cent-per-gallon gas tax and 37.3-cent diesel tax will lower operating costs and provide relief for small businesses and their customers,” Loggins said.
The National Federation of Independent Business – Georgia serves as an advocate for small and independent business owners by promoting policies that deliver tax relief and regulatory transparency, conducting surveys on small business optimism, endorsing candidates who support small business interests, offering resources such as webinars and newsletters, and engaging members statewide through events according to the official website.
