The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced a four-day road closure on US 80/W. Bay Street, starting July 8, due to improvements at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing. The closure will impact the section between SR 25/Main Street and Allen Boulevard in Chatham County. Traffic will be detoured during this period, with the closure lasting until July 11.
According to GDOT, “A contractor for Norfolk Southern will install the road closure with a detour in place as vehicular traffic cannot cross the railroad tracks during this work.” Access to businesses, schools, and residences near the work zone will remain available.
Detours have been outlined for both westbound and eastbound traffic. Westbound vehicles on US 80/W. Bay Street should use I-516 North to Exit 8 and then proceed via Main Street back onto US 80. Eastbound travelers are directed to use Burnsed Blvd. to enter I-516 South and exit at SR 25 Connector/Bay Street.
The completion timeline is subject to change based on weather conditions, with GDOT noting that “the roadway will reopen early if the work is completed ahead of schedule or could possibly be closed longer if weather delays the work.”
For updates on work status and traffic conditions, motorists are advised to use resources such as calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
GDOT emphasizes its role in maintaining state and federal highways while also supporting various transportation programs across Georgia. The department’s mission focuses on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility.
