Contractors working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) have finished building the new Oakley Road Bridge over Broadanax Creek in the City of South Fulton, Fulton County. The bridge is set to open to traffic on Friday, November 21. This $2 million project involved demolishing the old bridge, which was originally constructed in 1961.
The newly completed bridge measures 72 feet in length and includes one travel lane in each direction along with 6.5-foot-wide sidewalks. Construction began in August, during which time both the old bridge and a section of Oakley Road near Broadanax Creek were closed to traffic. This closure allowed crews to complete their work more efficiently and provided safer conditions for both workers and drivers.
Motorists are advised that some traffic delays may occur as the area reopens. Drivers should exercise caution and reduce speed while traveling through any remaining work zones. For up-to-date information on construction status and traffic conditions, GDOT recommends calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
According to GDOT, it plans, constructs, and maintains state and federal highways throughout Georgia. The department also supports local governments with road maintenance and oversees programs related to bridges, waterways, public transit, railroads, aviation, biking, and walking infrastructure.
