The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 4 that railroad crews will perform maintenance work at the railroad crossing on State Route 36 at Main Street in Talbot County, with road closures scheduled from May 4 through May 9. The project aims to improve the crossing for motorists traveling on State Route 127, and an off-site detour is anticipated during this period.

According to the department, “Dates are subject to change due to weather and/or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists should anticipate extended travel times and delays. Please avoid this closure area if at all possible.” The advisory also states that work will begin daily at 9 a.m., and motorists are encouraged to exercise caution, reduce speed while traveling through work zones, and check real-time traffic information by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development and benefit residents across the state, according to the official website. The department employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion, according to the official website.

The agency focuses on developing and maintaining Georgia’s roadways while supporting rail, transit and other transportation programs. It operates under the State Transportation Board and serves the entire state through its transportation network. The department also works with local governments and federal agencies to advance transportation efforts, according to its official website.

Further details about the closure and project updates can be found in the organization’s press release.
