Contractors working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement a detour in Monroe County to facilitate railway crossing safety improvements. The project involves Norfolk Southern Railway replacing rails at the intersection of State Route 83/State Route 42 (North Lee Street) and Tift College Drive.

Each crossing is scheduled to be closed for two days. The Tift College Drive crossing will be closed on September 10 and 11, 2025, while the SR 83/SR 42 (North Lee Street) crossing will close on September 15 and 16, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Warning signs have been placed in advance to alert motorists about the upcoming closures. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert and reduce their speed through the area.

“Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app,” according to GDOT.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining state and federal highways across Georgia. The agency also manages programs related to bridges, waterways, public transit, railroads, aviation, biking, and pedestrian travel. GDOT works with local governments on road maintenance projects as well. With nearly 4,000 employees statewide, GDOT emphasizes innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility in its transportation system initiatives. Its stated vision is “to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
