State Representative Anissa Jones (D-Macon) has released a statement in response to Governor Brian Kemp’s State of the State Address, emphasizing the importance of translating economic growth into stability for working families across Georgia.
Jones stated, “Economic growth must translate into stability for working families. That’s our North Star.” She stressed that basic needs such as healthcare, housing, utilities, education, and childcare are essential rather than optional. “Affordable and accessible healthcare, affordable housing and utilities and quality education with affordable childcare are not extras—they are essentials.”
Highlighting challenges faced by families, Jones noted the difficulties many parents encounter when trying to afford childcare. “Right now, a two-income family often needs a third job just to pay for childcare. Parents should never have to choose between keeping their job and caring for their children. And we know this: if a child is hungry, they cannot learn. As Democrats, we believe meeting basic needs is how opportunity begins.”
Jones outlined her caucus’s legislative priorities: “That’s why our caucus will work together to ensure every child has access to free lunch at school, families can afford childcare and communities can rely on strong schools and healthcare. When families are supported, Georgia’s economy doesn’t just grow—it works for everyone.”
She also emphasized the need for inclusive economic success throughout the state: “As we grow, we have to make sure working families can afford healthcare, housing, childcare and education. Economic success should reach rural and urban communities alike, from Macon-Bibb to Warner Robins and across our state.”
Concluding her statement, Jones said she anticipates collaboration with both the governor and fellow legislators: “I look forward to working with the governor and my colleagues to make sure this session delivers practical solutions—good jobs, quality schools, accessible healthcare and real opportunity for every Georgian. Growth is important, but shared prosperity is the goal.”
Burns was elected as a Republican representative for Georgia’s 159th House District in 2005 after Ray Holland.
