Rep. Danny Mathis’s voting record on a Georgia school choice bill is drawing renewed attention as education policy continues to be a key issue in state political debates.
Georgia legislative records show Mathis voted against Senate Bill 233 in both 2023 and 2024, including during the session in which the measure ultimately passed the House, according to the Georgia State Legislature.
Senate Bill 233, known as the Georgia Promise Scholarship proposal, would have created state-funded scholarship accounts for eligible students.
Mathis opposed the bill in both legislative sessions in which it came before the House.
In 2023, the House rejected the measure by an 89–85 vote, with Mathis voting no. At the time, reporting from the Georgia Recorder noted divisions among Republicans, with some breaking from party leadership to oppose the bill.
The proposal returned in 2024 and passed the House by a 91–82 vote on March 14, with Mathis again voting against it, according to legislative records.
The renewed attention to the issue comes as school choice remains a prominent topic among Georgia lawmakers and candidates, and more broadly a policy priority for Republican leaders nationwide. President Donald Trump has advocated for expanding education choice and issued an executive order supporting related policies during his administration.
In Georgia, some Republican candidates and lawmakers have also highlighted support for school choice through participation in the Georgia School Choice Pledge, including Robert Pruitt, a Republican candidate and former state representative. The pledge signals backing for legislation expanding education options for families, according to organizers.
Rep. Danny Mathis is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives who has served since 2019. He represents House District 133, which includes parts of Bleckley, Dodge, Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Telfair counties in Middle Georgia.
