State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) has introduced House Bill 1100, which proposes the creation of a Healthcare Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (H-SPLOST) in Georgia. The bill aims to provide a dedicated sales tax for healthcare purposes.
Bell stated, “Currently, more than 50 counties in Georgia lack a hospital, and more than one million Georgians are uninsured. Every community in Georgia deserves access to high quality healthcare, and this bill will equip local leaders with a much-needed tool to fund healthcare infrastructure and workforce development. Expanding access to healthcare remains a top priority for Democrats, and this legislation presents one of many steps our state can take to achieve this goal.”
The legislation is co-sponsored by Representatives Spencer Frye (D-Athens), Bryce Berry (D-Atlanta), Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta), Patty Marie Stinson (D-Butler), and Yasmin Neal (D-Jonesboro). If enacted, the bill would allow local voters to decide through a ballot referendum whether to implement the H-SPLOST.
Jon G. Burns is currently serving as the Republican representative for Georgia’s 159th House District after being elected in 2005.
