State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) has introduced House Bill 954, also known as “Eric’s Law,” in the Georgia General Assembly. The proposed legislation is designed to support Georgians with physical or mental disabilities that are not immediately visible.
“Eric’s Law is about awareness and safety,” Rep. Bell said. “This legislation would allow Georgians with hidden disabilities, such as autism, intellectual or developmental disabilities or hearing impairments, to voluntarily add a butterfly symbol to their driver’s license or ID to alert first responders and promote safer, more respectful interactions. Originating in Maryland and named after Eric Carpenter-Grantham, Eric’s Law recognizes that many Georgians live with disabilities that aren’t visible at first glance and gives them a simple, dignified way to communicate that reality. I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance this meaningful legislation, which has the potential to change many Georgians’ lives.”
If enacted, HB 954 would let individuals request a symbol on their driver’s license indicating a non-visible disability by submitting a sworn statement describing the disability to the Department of Driver Services.
Jon G. Burns has served as a Republican representative for Georgia’s 159th House District since 2005 after succeeding Ray Holland.
