State Representative Eric Gisler (D-Watkinsville) has introduced House Resolution 1200, urging Georgia’s secretary of state to continue protecting private information within the state’s voter registration list. The resolution addresses concerns about a recent request from the U.S. Department of Justice for unredacted copies of this list.

“Today, I have filed a resolution that re-affirms that if the secretary of state were to release recently requested information to the U.S. Department of Justice, it would not only violate state law, but it would also violate the trust of Georgia voters and unnecessarily put their personal information at risk,” said Rep. Gisler. “This resolution should not be necessary or partisan, as it is a simple affirmation of current Georgia law. I announced this resolution to the full House Chamber last Thursday and openly requested bipartisan co-sponsors.”

If adopted, HR 1200 would reinforce existing protections on private voter data and assert that such information should not be shared without redaction in response to federal requests.

Jon G. Burns, a Republican who was elected in 2005, currently represents Georgia’s 159th House District.
