State Representative Floyd Griffin has responded to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement regarding Veterans Day. The president suggested renaming the holiday as “Victory Day for World War I.” However, the White House later stated there are no plans to rename Veterans Day.
Griffin, a veteran himself, expressed his surprise at the proposal. He emphasized that Veterans Day is meant to honor all who have served in the United States Armed Forces across different generations and conflicts. “These brave men and women lay down their lives for their country every day and sacrifice everything for their American sisters and brothers,” Griffin stated. He believes that focusing on a single war undermines the sacrifices of veterans from various conflicts such as Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Griffin urged a focus on supporting veterans through healthcare, education, and reforms to veterans’ benefits rather than renaming the holiday. He criticized the Trump administration’s actions which he claims include cutting programs and funding while targeting vulnerable populations. “Every day since President Trump took office, Americans learn of new programs being slashed,” he remarked.
As a retired combat veteran and Vietnam service member, Griffin stands with Georgia’s veterans in preserving Veterans Day’s true meaning.
