State Representative Floyd Griffin (D-Milledgeville) has responded to Governor Brian Kemp’s State of the State Address, emphasizing that tangible outcomes should be the focus for lawmakers. Griffin stated, “Results, not rhetoric must guide the work of the General Assembly. The State of the State speech outlined broad goals for Georgia, but my responsibility is to make sure those goals translate into real, measurable benefits for the people of Baldwin County, Jones County and east Macon.”

He noted that many priorities mentioned by Governor Kemp align with issues he has advocated for in the legislature. “Several themes raised by the governor are issues that I have long championed for in the legislature: education, public safety, workforce development and fiscal responsibility. Whether we are talking about education funding, economic opportunity or protecting democratic accountability, I will continue to ask one simple question: ‘How does this help my district?’”

Griffin reaffirmed his commitment to supporting strong public education systems and ensuring government accountability. He said, “I am committed to strong public education and accountability, economic development that benefits local workers, not just corporations, responsible budgeting that respects taxpayers and transparent government where elected officials are accountable to the people.”

He also made clear his approach toward bipartisan cooperation. “While welcoming collaboration, I want to make it clear that my support for any proposal will depend on its impact on my constituents. Leadership means solving problems, not creating them. I will work with anyone—Republican or Democrat—when it benefits my district, and I will stand firm when it does not.”

Looking ahead to legislative activities in coming weeks—including committee hearings and bill introductions—Griffin pledged ongoing communication with his constituents: “The coming weeks will include committee hearings, bill introductions and vigorous debate, and I pledge to keep constituents informed throughout the process. This session is about moving Georgia forward while making sure no community is left behind. I will continue to keep my boots on the ground and my focus on the people I serve.”

He encouraged residents of House District 149 to stay engaged during the session: “I encourage residents of House District 149 to follow my legislative updates and share their views as the session progresses.”

Jon G. Burns was elected as a Republican representative for Georgia’s 159th House District in 2005.
