The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced that the US 17/SR 404 Spur Bridge, also known as the Talmadge Memorial Bridge in Savannah, will be closed starting this afternoon. The closure follows an incident in which a crane struck the underside of the bridge’s main span during its transit on the Savannah River.
According to Georgia DOT, the closure is a precautionary measure to allow for a thorough inspection of the bridge and to ensure public safety. The agency has not specified how long the bridge will remain closed.
“Georgia DOT is announced today that the US 17/SR 404 Spur Bridge in Savannah will be closed beginning this afternoon so that the agency can conduct an inspection of the bridge, following a bridge strike incident in which a crane struck the underside of the main span of the bridge during a crane transit on the Savannah River. The bridge, known as the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, will remain closed for an indeterminate period out of an abundance of caution to inspect for any possible damage, a measure taken for the safety of the traveling public.”
Further updates regarding inspection results or reopening timelines are expected from Georgia DOT as information becomes available.
