Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced on April 14 that his office will host a FIN FIT webinar titled “Finfluencers: Hype, Help, or Hazard” on Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. The event is part of ongoing efforts to promote financial literacy and will be accessible both by phone and online.

The upcoming webinar aims to address the growing influence of social media personalities who offer financial advice. As more people turn to digital platforms for investment tips and money management strategies, questions have arisen about the credibility and risks associated with these so-called ‘finfluencers.’

“The world of financial advice has moved from behind a desk to our phones or computers. While this shift offers greater access it also comes with greater risks,” said Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. “We appreciate the rise in financial literacy, but our priority remains to make sure that as information goes viral, the fundamental principles of investor protection and accountability don’t get lost in the feed.”

The session will be moderated by award-winning journalist Donna Lowry. Richard Coffin, CFA, CFP, portfolio manager with WDS Investment Management and host of The Plain Bagel, will serve as speaker for the free event. Attendees can participate using any device and will have opportunities to ask questions during dedicated Q&A segments throughout the program.

FIN FIT is described as a financial empowerment program administered through the Securities and Charities divisions under Secretary Raffensperger’s office. The initiative features webinars led by industry leaders focused on increasing knowledge about personal finance topics such as wealth-building strategies and understanding one’s relationship with money.

The Secretary of State’s office encourages all Georgians interested in improving their financial literacy to attend these free workshops.
