Senator David Lucas (D–Macon) has introduced Senate Bill 380, which aims to expand Medicaid coverage across Georgia. The bill would allow the state to use federal funds to provide health insurance for low-income residents and broaden eligibility requirements.

Lucas explained his motivation for the legislation, stating, “Having served in the Georgia General Assembly for five decades, I know how rising healthcare costs have impacted Georgia families over the years. With so many Georgians being priced out of coverage, we need solutions that expand access to care and close the healthcare coverage gap. Across the country, states that expanded Medicaid coverage have seen increased employment, better hospitals and huge economic gain. The simple truth is that healthy people work more and earn more, building stronger families and communities. With many Georgians already struggling to afford basic care, expanding Medicaid is the only path for millions of people to afford to see a doctor and get the quality healthcare they deserve.”

The proposal comes after tax credits under the Affordable Care Act expired, leading to higher insurance premiums for about 24 million Americans nationwide. Senate Bill 380 has been sent to the Health and Human Services committee for further consideration.

Senator Lucas represents Georgia’s 26th Senate District, covering Hancock, Johnson, Twiggs, Washington and Wilkinson counties as well as parts of Bibb and Houston counties.

Senate leadership in Georgia has focused on legislative sponsorship and committee responsibilities. Senator John F. Kennedy held roles such as President Pro Tempore and chaired several committees including Administrative Affairs. He also served as an ex-officio member on committees like Ethics, Finance, Health and Human Services, and Rules according to information from his official website. Kennedy represented Georgia’s 18th District since being sworn into office on January 12, 2015.
