Today, Senator Emanuel Jones of Decatur issued a statement addressing the United States’ recent military action against Iranian nuclear facilities. The operation is part of the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Iran.

In his statement, Senator Jones criticized President Trump’s decision to authorize the strike without seeking congressional approval. He remarked, “By authorizing the United States military to destroy Iranian nuclear facilities without seeking congressional approval, President Trump has continued his pattern of acting as though he were a king, unanswerable to the people.”

Jones emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional protocols, stating that if the conflict escalates further due to this decision, he expects the president to inform Congress before engaging U.S. troops in such significant danger. He added that members of Congress should not allow President Trump to avoid accountability for what he termed “belligerent behavior.”

Despite his criticism of the president’s actions, Jones praised U.S. service members for their courage and heroism during the operation. “Although Trump’s decision to order the attack was irresponsible, our brave service members completed their operation with courage and heroism characteristic of the U.S. military,” he stated.

Jones expressed hope that these efforts would successfully eliminate Iran’s illicit nuclear program and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with allies like Israel to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He concluded by underscoring that “the safety of all Georgians depends on it.”

Senator Emanuel Jones represents Georgia’s 10th Senate District in DeKalb County.
